Help Andean communities and win a trip to Ecuador

FIBUSPAM is an international organization operating within the most remote indigenous communities in Chimborazo, Ecuador. In this province, 70% of the pre-Incan indigenous community, named Puruha, has insufficient economic resources to have any or little access to medical treatments and 28% of the children endure the stresses and strains of undernourishment. Resulting in children and parents having curable injuries and treatable injuries ending up with serious or unrepairable medical conditions.

FIBUSPAM´s mission is to provide children and adults living in extreme poverty with affordable medical treatments and the humanitarian support they need.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a dire impact in Ecuador. The already fragile health system has reached capacity, resulting in many Covid-19 patients dying at home and uncontrolled spread of the disease. Further, Covid-19 prevention has not reached many of the remote indigenous villages where we work rustling in practices that are a hindrance to disease control.

The overall goal of this project is to flatten the Covid-19 curve in the Andean region of Ecuador. As such, Project Respond’s objectives are three-fold. First, all patients seeking care at the FIBUSPAM clinic will be screened for Covid-19 and suspected cases will be referred for testing and treatment.

Second, we will provide both virtual and on-site Covid-19 prevention education in order to limit local transmission. Lastly, we will increase our capacity to treat non-Covid-19 cases who now have limited options for emergency and urgent health care due to the failure of the local health system. This measure would potentially reduce the number of secondary mortality and morbidity as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

FIBUSPAM will also ensure the continuation of its emergency and urgent care services. Given that the public health system in Ecuador is overwhelmed, individuals who are suffering from non-COVID related diseases and injuries now have no access to urgent and emergency health care.

As a result it is expected that most regions will experience an increase in overall death rates due to a lack of these services. FIBUSPAM is committed to ensuring that our urgent care services remain open and increasing the availability of these services to ensure that all Ecuadorians in need have access to quality urgent care services, thus avoiding secondary motility and mortality as a result of Covid-19.

Now, with the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the indigenous communities served by the non-profit have been some of the hardest hit. FIBUSPAM is currently in dire need of additional funding and resources if it is to successfully aid these communities in their time of greatest need.

All individuals who channel donations through Ecuatraveling will automatically be entered into a contest to win a trip to the Galapagos or a trip to the Amazon Rainforest in Waita Lodge.

Donation will be spent on purchasing personal protective gear for our medical staff,  ensuring that our staffing levels can meet the current demand for screening, education, and direct medical care and support the creation and publication of educational materials and Covid-19 prevention tool kits.
