Salento, a picturesque village nestled in Colombia’s Coffee Region, is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and natural beauty. Famous for its vibrant streets, colorful colonial houses, and warm hospitality, Salento offers an authentic Colombian experience that captivates visitors from around the world.
A Town Full of Charm
Despite welcoming over 100,000 visitors daily during peak seasons like January, Salento retains its small-town charm. Iconic Willy’s Jeeps, cobblestone streets, and breathtaking coffee farm views set the tone for a memorable stay. Our trip began at Coffee Tree Hostel, a cozy haven perfect for unwinding and planning daily adventures.
During our visit, we stumbled upon a local celebration. Streets came alive with salsa dancing, locals donning traditional ponchos and hats, and mouthwatering Colombian street food. One of the highlights was playing Tejo, a traditional Colombian game involving a target and small explosions of gunpowder—an unforgettable cultural experience!
Mountain Biking and the Cocora Valley
The next day, we embarked on an adrenaline-filled adventure. With a knowledgeable local guide, we hopped into a 4x4 Jeep with mountain bikes strapped to the roof and headed up into the mountains. The journey to our starting point offered panoramic views, but the real thrill began once we mounted our bikes.
Our descent into the Cocora Valley combined breathtaking landscapes and heart-pumping excitement. Known for its iconic wax palms, the valley is home to the tallest palm trees in the world, reaching heights of up to 60 meters. This UNESCO-listed wonder exudes a magical atmosphere, making it one of Colombia’s most iconic natural attractions.
One unique aspect of our trip was access to a private section of the Cocora Valley, free from crowds. This secluded paradise allowed us to connect with untouched nature and observe flourishing wildlife, including vibrant parrot populations.
A Picnic to Remember
We paused amidst the towering wax palms for a picnic surrounded by the valley’s awe-inspiring beauty. The serene setting made for one of the most memorable outdoor meals I’ve ever experienced.
Thrills and Friendships on Two Wheels
After our picnic, the adventure continued with a steep downhill biking challenge. The descent required careful control but delivered a thrilling rush. Our group included Dutch travelers, known for their biking prowess, adding a competitive edge. I was the first to reach the bottom, earning the prize: a cold beer from the fridge—the perfect way to celebrate a successful ride!
We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, swapping travel stories, and soaking in the day’s experiences.
