On September 19, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuador, via public transport. This charming town is nestled in the Andes and is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant nightlife, and therapeutic hot springs.

Arrival at Selina Baños

I arrived in the afternoon and checked into the cozy Selina Hotel, a haven for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation. The evening was free to explore, and locals highly recommended the Leprechaun Bar, a favorite spot for its lively atmosphere and crackling fire pit.

After grabbing a quick bite of pizza, I ventured to Leprechaun Bar. While enjoying my beer by the fire, I met a fellow traveler from Spain. A 32-year-old digital nomad, he shared stories about teaching Spanish online through Preply. We quickly bonded over our shared love for travel, alternating between English and Spanish as we chatted.

Waterfall Adventures in Baños

The next morning, my new friend had Spanish lessons to teach, so we planned an afternoon adventure to explore two of Baños’ most stunning waterfalls. Navigating the local buses was a breeze with his fluency in Spanish.

Stop 1: Hidden Waterfall

Our first destination was a serene waterfall tucked away from the crowds. After a 30-minute hike down a trail with plenty of stairs, we arrived to find the cascading waters all to ourselves. We took a refreshing dip, mindful of the area’s strong currents. The tranquil setting made it a perfect start to our day.

Stop 2: Pailón del Diablo

Next, we visited the iconic Pailón del Diablo, or “Devil’s Cauldron.” This majestic waterfall is one of Ecuador’s most famous attractions, known for its thunderous roar and mystical rock formations that some say resemble the devil’s face. Standing in awe of its power and beauty, I realized this spot would forever hold a special place in my heart.

Unwinding at the Termas de La Virgen

After our waterfall adventure, a local restaurant owner treated us to traditional Ecuadorian snacks and recommended the Termas de La Virgen hot springs. Surrounded by locals and framed by a stunning volcano backdrop, the hot springs offered a perfect way to relax after a day of hiking.

We alternated between the warm thermal pools and refreshing cold showers, enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the natural waters. The experience was nothing short of blissful.

The Magic of Solo Travel

This journey to Baños reminded me of the joys of solo travel—the serendipity of meeting new people, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories. From exploring waterfalls to soaking in hot springs, my time in Baños was an adventure I’ll cherish forever. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone seeking natural beauty, cultural immersion, and unexpected friendships.
