Get ready for an unforgettable adventure, starting bright and early with a 6 AM pickup at Plaza Foch, right in the heart of Quito. From there, we’ll hit the road for a scenic drive of about 130 kilometers (around 81 miles) southwest to Quilotoa, a stunning volcanic crater lake that will take your breath away.

First Stop: Saquisilí Market
Our journey kicks off with a visit to the lively Saquisilí market, held every Thursday in an indigenous community. As we approach, I’m immediately struck by the burst of color and energy that fills the air. Local vendors are showcasing everything from handmade textiles to fresh fruits and veggies, creating an inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for soaking in the local culture.
You’ll have the chance to wander through the market, interact with friendly locals, and experience a vibrant slice of life in this charming community. It’s not just about shopping; it’s about immersing yourself in the rhythm of the place.

A Glimpse Into Daily Life
After exploring the market, we head deeper into the community to see how the locals live. Here, guinea pigs roam freely—a key ingredient in the traditional dish called “Cuy,” which is a beloved local delicacy. It’s fascinating to see how these little animals, which many of us keep as pets, play a central role in local cuisine.
The community is also known for raising alpacas, whose wool is spun into beautiful clothing. You’ll also spot locals wearing traditional outfits, often including colorful hats, that reflect the area’s rich cultural heritage. As we walk through the village, I remember a story one of the locals shared with us about how every part of the animals they raise is used in some way—whether it’s for food, textiles, or even ceremonial purposes. It’s a humbling reminder of how deeply intertwined nature and culture are in this part of Ecuador.

Next Stop: Quilotoa Lake
After our cultural exploration, we continue toward Quilotoa Lake, sitting at an altitude of 3,914 meters (12,838 feet) above sea level. This crater lake, formed by a volcanic eruption back in 1280, is one of Ecuador’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. As we approach the lake, the views are nothing short of spectacular, with turquoise waters glistening in shades of blue that almost look too beautiful to be real.
As I chat with fellow travelers from the Netherlands, we all share the same feeling of amazement at the dramatic landscape around us. The stark contrast between the shimmering lake and the rugged Andes Mountains is absolutely breathtaking.

A Horseback Ride to Finish the Day
To cap off this incredible day trip, I saddle up for a horseback ride around the crater’s rim. Riding through this stunning scenery offers a completely new perspective on Ecuador’s natural beauty, making for an experience you won’t forget.
If you're looking for an adventure that combines stunning landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable moments, I highly recommend this day trip to Quilotoa. It’s an experience that’s definitely worth the journey!
