Lost City Trek – The green inferno

Tour Details

Day 1: Start of the Adventure

9:00 AM: Begin your journey at the agency's office in Santa Marta, where you'll depart in a 4x4 truck or jeep for a two-hour drive, half on paved roads and half on rugged mountain roads, to reach the small town of Mamey (Machete Pelao) at 120 meters above sea level.

12:00 PM: Enjoy lunch in Mamey before starting your hike through the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. The hike will take you through a humid tropical forest, starting at 120 meters and reaching a maximum elevation of 620 meters, with an overnight stop at 470 meters above sea level.

3:00 PM: The hike will last approximately 3 to 4 hours, covering a distance of 9.3 km, with breaks for hydration, fruit, and information stops. Prepare for a sunny day with a temperature around 34°C, as you enjoy excellent views and nature.

Accommodation: Camp #1

Activities: 4x4 drive + Hike to Camp #1

Day 2: Entering Indigenous Territory

7:00 AM: Start your day with a pleasant and scenic walk as you enter the indigenous territory of the Kogui ethnic group. Learn about their ancestral traditions as you visit one of their villages.

11:00 AM: Continue your hike along the Buritaca River, reaching the second campsite by midday. Here, enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the river, have lunch, and rest before continuing your journey.

1:00 PM: The afternoon walk will take you deeper into the mountains to reach your third campsite, "Paraiso Teyuna," where you can relax in a natural pool and listen to stories from your guides.

Morning Walk: Approximately 3 to 4 hours, covering 9.6 km, starting at 470 meters and reaching a maximum elevation of 680 meters.

Afternoon Walk: Approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, covering 10.4 km, starting at 460 meters and reaching a maximum elevation of 730 meters, with an overnight stop at 800 meters above sea level.

Accommodation: Camp #3 (Paraiso Teyuna)

Activities: Indigenous village visit + Hike to Camp #2 and #3

Day 3: The Lost City (Teyuna)

6:00 AM: This is the day to explore the legendary Lost City (Teyuna). Cross the Buritaca River and ascend 1,200 stone steps to reach the sacred city. Spend the morning exploring this extraordinary archaeological site, with plenty of time for photos and reflection.

12:00 PM: Return to Camp #3 for lunch and some rest. Afterward, continue your hike back to Camp #2, following the same path you took earlier.

Morning Walk: Approximately 2 hours to ascend and descend from the Lost City, plus time spent exploring the archaeological park at an elevation of 1,200 meters, with temperatures around 26°C.

Afternoon Walk: Approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, covering 10.4 km, descending from 800 meters to 460 meters above sea level.

Accommodation: Camp #2

Food: B-L-D

Activities: Visit to Teyuna (Lost City) + Hike to Camp #2

Day 4: Return to Santa Marta

5:30 AM: Start your early morning descent from Camp #2 to Machete Pelao. The journey back is long but rewarding, with a stop at Camp #1 to recharge with a snack and enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural pool.

12:00 PM: Continue the final leg of the hike to Machete Pelao, where you'll have lunch before being transferred back to Santa Marta.

Morning Walk: Approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering 18 km, starting at 460 meters and descending to 120 meters above sea level. Temperatures will be around 30°C.

2:00 PM: Arrive back in Santa Marta, where your adventure concludes.

Activities: Hike back to Machete Pelao + Transfer to Santa Marta
